The Thymus Gland is essential to the body. It produces T-Cells which protect the human body from infections and harmful bacteria. Without these cells, the immune system is severely compromised; many children born without a thymus do not survive beyond two years of age. To protect their at risk children, families are told to stay in complete isolation until a thymus transplant is performed and T-cells start to emerge (which takes an additional 9 months after surgery).

Thankfully, there is a treatment available for children born without a thymus - transplant surgery. There are only two hospitals in the world that perform this life saving procedure: The University of Duke, and the Great Ormond Hospital in London. The transplant has helped many children from around the world restore their immune system.

Because there currently only 2 facilities in the world that perform the thymus transplant surgery, families face significant travel and medical expenses.. Romans 12:12 aims to help those families with these expenses.
